It is time to discover Eger!
Spend a day in Eger, one of Hungary’s most iconic towns. We’ll explore its legendary medieval castle, walk through the historic underground tunnels beneath the fortress, visit Szépasszony-völgy for local wines, and finish at Hungary’s oldest Turkish bath.
We’ll meet at Budapest stadion autóbusz pályaudvar at 8:15 am, and travel together to Eger (approx. 2 h via direct bus).
Our first stop will be Eger Castle, one of Hungary’s most famous fortresses, where a small group of defenders resisted a much larger Ottoman army during the legendary siege of 1552. We’ll explore the castle and walk through its underground tunnel system, discovering the history and events that took place here during the 15th–16th centuries.
After exploring the castle, we’ll head to Szépasszony-völgy (Valley of the Beautiful Woman), Eger’s famous wine district, where we’ll enjoy a tasting of five local wines in one of its traditional wine cellars.
We’ll stop for lunch at a traditional local tavern, where you can try some of the region’s typical Hungarian dishes.
We’ll finish at Eger’s historic Turkish Bath, built around 1610. Its warm spring water contains a tiny amount of radon, a natural radioactive gas found in some thermal waters, and is known for its relaxing, traditionally therapeutic effects — a perfect way to relax while soaking in centuries of history.
Return to Budapest in the evening, carrying stories, flavors, and memories from a day exploring Eger’s hidden corners and historic treasures.
